What to expect when coming for elective surgery at Birchmed

At Birchmed we want to provide reassurance for any patient going in for surgery.  Below an easy way of the process to each patient what to expect through your journey at Birchmed.  If you need further assistance please speak to the Clinic Manager or Theatre Manager.

  1. What precaution have been put in place at Birchmed Surgical Centre?
    We have implemented screening for patients, Doctors, staff and any other individual’s coming in to the Clinic. All patients have done a pre admission Covid test prior admission. Our staff have all been equipped with the necessary PPE to ensure that we are able to care for all our patients. All patients to wear a mask when entering the Clinic.

  2. Admission and forms to be completed 
    When your doctor has confirmed that you will be undergoing surgery at Birchmed, he/she will provide you with the necessary procedural details please contact the Medical Aid to get Authorisation.  Complete the admission form on the website.

  3. COVID -19 testing 
    Your Doctor will refer you’re for a Covid -19 swab test that must be conducted prior confirming the Surgery.

  4. COVID-19 screening 
    You will be completing a questionnaire and screened when you come into the hospital.

  5. Ward routine and what to expect
    Your admission to the Ward will proceed as normal; however, each patient will be expected to wear a cloth mask during admission. Due to the current visitor restrictions, you will not be able to have a family member or friend accompany you for the surgery. Only 1 parent will by allowed during hospitalization of minor children.

  6. Theatre 
    We can assure you that additional precautions have been taken in theatre to reduce the risks of transmission.

  7. Planning for you admission 
    Your doctor will explain the anticipated length of time you can expect to be admitted into Clinic of your day admission case. Your doctor will also explain which days are available for surgery. This will depend on the Doctor’s  particular theatre slate as well as capacity in the particular Theatre.  The Doctor  will also explain the testing process for COVID-19 testing, to ensure that the hospital fully understands your condition before surgery.
